lyrics

the outlaw

bells ring out
and break the silence
his hands still shake
an ebbing violence
no matter how far he roams
he will never find
a place a home

down every street
their eyes hide
and they’ll never meet
‘til fear subsides
he may save them from their sorrow
but for him there is
no tomorrow

the outlaw came to me
his smile a distant memory
his heart so long a stone
begins to melt
like snow

his eyes will never see
the children’s smiles
nor on the dusty earth
the flowers strewn wild
thanks fall like petals on deaf ears
his bed well-watered now
with these strangers’ tears

the outlaw came to me
his tears a memory
his heart wide open now
stars breathed in
stars breathed out

he was my outlaw
