lyrics

in my town

old roads wind over ridges
the whispered ghosts of bullock drays
city blocks kiss the river
that tries to sweep them away
two million live and breathe
in this clump of humanity
but chances are good when you compare
each will connect to me

in my town
where the river
runs like a spine
to the sea

it’s a country town masquerading
with its big city lights
and sophistication it’s parading
still it all shuts on a sunday night
the sun streams through wide windows
the rains lash a landlocked beach
and in the shortest of short winters
the winds still feel like they freeze

in my town
where the river
runs like a spine
to the sea

music venues are closing
pushed out by apartment blocks
they want inner city living
but don’t want their corner to rock
and the homeless keep getting shifted
to ease the views of the rich
but the problems that bring them aren’t being lifted
there’s no simple switch

in my town
where the river
runs like a spine
to the sea

disaster strikes in the summer
when rain turns to flood
the city empties of people
and the car parks fill with mud
and when it’s all over
when the river slips away
we clean out and rebuild
watching the memories sluice away

in my town
where the river
runs like a spine
to the sea

it’s a big country town masquerading
with its big city lights
but it all still closes early
on a sunday night

about

thewhiskeyarchive Brisbane, Australia

thewhiskeyarchive brought together the vocal, musical and songwriting talents of ukulele songstress Jane Cameron and singer/songwriter Mark Bentley.

The result was a blend of smooth, smokey indie folk with a hint of alt country and a nod to the punk/goth influences of Brisbane's music scene in the '70s and '80s.
