background babble too much for thought
i keep circling the truth without seeing it
edging through a crowd of formless hints

if i close my eyes I can picture it
a hazy vision of thoughts and dreams
but my eyes fly open and it escapes
i’m left with nothing to ease this state

you know i’ve searched my share of whiskey and evil gin
no matter how hard i look that little demon won’t let me in

i keep hoping the fire will come to me
a blazing message of burning need
of a higher purpose an altruist’s dream
a torch to fight some inequity

but in this fog of confusion where I exist
the walls are close and the air is thick
with the petty concerns of my everyday
i’m left with nothing of worth to say

a glimpse of you and the urge to impress
that led from one courage sip to a dozen more
